A slab door is a single flat panel with no frame and no moulding. The face is one plane; the edge is banded or painted. It is the default door for modern and handleless kitchens, and the cheapest profile to produce.

How it is built

A slab door is one piece of board, usually 18 mm MDF or particleboard, cut to size, edged on all four sides and finished. There is no joint to fail and no panel to move, which is why it stays flat on tall units where a five-piece door would twist.

The weakness moves to the edge. A slab door has four exposed edges taking knocks, steam and cleaning chemicals, so banding quality decides how it ages. 1 mm PVC or ABS with a glued, trimmed edge lasts; 0.4 mm tape lifts within a couple of years.

Materials and finishes that work

Four finishes cover most of the market: melamine or HPL (flat, durable, printed grain), two-pack lacquer (best colour depth, needs a controlled spray line), veneer (real grain, needs a lacquered top coat), and thermofoil or PVC film (cheap, wraps the edge in one piece).

Match the finish to the room, not to the sample. A matt lacquer slab door looks exceptional in a showroom and shows every fingerprint in a family kitchen; a textured melamine hides them.

Where slab fails

Wide doors without a mid rail. Above roughly 600 mm at 18 mm thick, a slab door sags on its hinges over time; the door itself stays flat but the hinge line drops. Either split the door or use three hinges and a heavier grade.

Cheap banding on wet areas. Laundry and bathroom doors fail at the bottom edge first, where water sits. Specify sealed edges, not just banded edges.

Frequently asked questions

Is a slab door cheaper than shaker?

Yes, typically 10–20% less, because there is one panel instead of five parts and no joint machining. The gap narrows when the slab door needs a two-pack lacquer finish, which costs more than painting a shaker frame.

Can slab doors be handleless?

Yes, and this is where they work best. Options are a routed finger pull in the top edge, a J-profile handle strip, or push-to-open hardware. The J-profile is the most durable of the three.

Do slab doors warp?

The panel itself rarely warps at 18 mm. What people notice is hinge drop on wide doors, which looks like warping. Fix it with a third hinge or a narrower door.

What edge banding should I specify?

1 mm PVC or ABS, glue-line applied and trimmed flush. On wet areas, add a sealing coat to the bottom edge. 0.4 mm tape is only appropriate for low-use furniture.
