HMR (high moisture resistance) board is particleboard or MDF manufactured with a moisture-resistant resin system, usually dyed green or blue through the core for identification. The dye is a marker, not the protection: the performance comes from the resin and the density.
What HMR actually is
The board is not coated and not waterproof. The resin in the core resists water uptake, which slows swelling at cut edges and in humid air. A 24-hour swell test on HMR particleboard typically shows roughly half the thickness swelling of standard board — better, but still swelling.
The colour is a convention, not a standard. Some mills dye the whole core, some only the surface layer, and some supply MR board undyed. If moisture resistance matters, ask for the test result, not the colour of the edge.
| Board | Water behaviour | Relative cost | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard particleboard | Swells at edge, no recovery | Low | Dry rooms only |
| HMR particleboard | Slower uptake, still swells if wet | Low-mid | Laundry, bathroom vanity carcass |
| MR MDF | Lower swell, better edge | Mid | Painted wet-area components |
| WBP plywood | Tolerates standing water | High | Sink bases, dishwasher housings |
Where it is actually required
Laundry cabinets, bathroom vanities, and any carcass within roughly a metre of a water source. In those locations the board sees steam and occasional splashes rather than standing water, which is exactly the condition HMR is designed for.
It is also worth specifying on coastal projects, where ambient humidity is high year-round. Not because the board gets wet, but because the equilibrium moisture content is higher and standard board moves more.
Where HMR is misused
Under a sink or around a dishwasher, where a leak is plausible. HMR slows the damage but does not prevent it; a WBP plywood base or a sealed aluminium tray is the correct answer there.
On cut edges left unsealed. The core is the vulnerable part, and every shelf notch, hinge cut-out and service hole exposes it. Seal cut edges on wet-area carcasses — the board grade alone is not enough.
Frequently asked questions
Is HMR board waterproof?
No. It resists moisture uptake but will still swell if water sits on an unsealed edge. It is a slower failure, not immunity.
Does the green colour prove it is HMR?
No. The dye is a mill convention and some MR boards are undyed. Ask for the swelling test result and the board specification.
HMR or MR MDF for a bathroom vanity?
HMR particleboard is adequate for the carcass where edges are sealed. MR MDF is better for painted doors and panels because it machines and paints more cleanly.
Should I use HMR board everywhere?
No. It costs more and offers no benefit in dry rooms. Use it where water or high humidity is expected, and seal the cut edges there.
