Armoire and wardrobe are very similar pieces of furniture. And sometimes it may be difficult to tell the difference between them. Both have a similar structure of closed doors. Also, both armoire and wardrobe are used to store clothes. Then, what is the difference between a wardrobe and an armoire? Usually, an armoire is a bigger piece of furniture, and it is more ornate than a wardrobe. In contrast, wardrobes, in general, are mostly designed for more hanging space. Of course, today, wardrobe designs change according to needs.

Differences in Usage

Another difference is that in contrast to its bulky structure, the usage of an armoire is quite flexible, while the usage of a wardrobe is solely for storing clothes. As armoires come in different sizes, people have been using them in their house for not only storing clothes but also for different storing options. This is because armoires have two doors to hide away items inside and thus provide a much formal and tidy look from the outside. It is hard to do the same thing with wardrobes since unlike armoires, wardrobes are smaller in size and include less and smaller shelf space.

Differences in Design

The difference between an armoire and a wardrobe can be observed just by looking at their visual design. Often both an armoire and a wardrobe are built from wood, which can be oak or mahogany. Even though nowadays there are cheaper wardrobes made of veneer or plastic, they are less sturdy. In general, wardrobes have a plain and somewhat basic look with wood panels, hanging rail, shelves, and drawers. Whereas armoires have always been more ornate and quite large. Antique armoires can be very expensive since mostly they are often carved, embossed, or delicately crafted. The simplistic nature and smaller size of wardrobes, on the other hand, make them less expensive.

Differences in Design

Similarity of them

A wardrobe or armoire is a standing closet used for storing clothes. The earliest wardrobe was a chest, and it was not until some degree of luxury was attained in regal palaces and the castles of powerful nobles that separate accommodation was provided for the apparel of the great. The name of wardrobe was then given to a room in which the wall-space was filled with closets and lockers, the drawer being a comparatively modern invention. From these cupboards and lockers the modern wardrobe, with its hanging spaces, sliding shelves and drawers, evolved slowly.
