E1 is the formaldehyde emission class that most of Europe, and much of the world outside North America, treats as the legal minimum for interior board. Under EN 717-1 chamber testing the limit is 0.124 mg/m³, roughly 0.1 ppm — a different test and a different unit from the Chinese E1 figure of 1.5 mg/L.
One label, two measurements
In Europe, E1 is measured in a chamber and expressed in mg/m³ or ppm. In China, E1 is measured by the desiccator method and expressed in mg/L. Both are called E1, and the numbers are not comparable — 1.5 mg/L is not "fifteen times" 0.124 mg/m³, because the methods measure different things.
This matters commercially. A supplier quoting "E1" without the method is quoting a label, and the label means different things in different markets. Ask which standard: EN 717-1, GB/T, or ASTM.
| سوق | الأسلوب | E1 limit | ملاحظة |
|---|---|---|---|
| أوروبا | EN 717-1 chamber | 0.124 مجم / متر مكعب | Legal baseline for interior board |
| الصين | مجفف | شنومكس ملغم / لتر | E0 (0.5 mg/L) sits below it |
| أستراليا / نيوزيلندا | AS/NZS references | يختلف حسب التطبيق | Project specs often cite E1 or better |
| الولايات المتحدة | CARB / TSCA | 0.09-0.13 جزء في المليون | Different class system, not called E1 |
Why E1 is a floor, not a feature
Every board legally sold for interior use in the EU meets E1. Presenting it as an achievement is like advertising that a car has brakes. What differentiates suppliers is the grade above E1 — E0, CARB P2 where relevant, or a specific low-emission board with a named test report.
That said, E1 compliance is worth verifying rather than assuming. Board sold into export markets does not always carry the certificate the destination requires, and the gap is discovered at customs or at handover.
How to verify it properly
Request the test report for the specific board grade, with the method stated, the factory named and the date within the last two years. A certificate covering "particleboard" generally is not evidence for the 18 mm E1 board in your container.
On large projects, ask for a batch-level declaration and keep a sample of each board type. If a question arises later, the retained sample is the only thing that settles it.
الأسئلة المتكررة
Is E1 safe?
E1 is the legal minimum for interior board in the EU and is considered acceptable for normal residential use. Lower-emission boards exist for sensitive applications; E1 is the floor, not the ceiling.
Is Chinese E1 the same as European E1?
No. Same label, different method and unit — 1.5 mg/L by desiccator versus 0.124 mg/m³ by chamber. They cannot be converted directly.
Does E1 board need to be declared on the invoice?
For most export markets, yes — the commercial documents should reference the standard and the grade. It also protects you if the board is questioned on arrival.
What is better than E1?
E0 (0.5 mg/L, desiccator) in Asian specifications, or a board with a verified chamber result below the EN 717-1 limit. In the US, CARB P2 / TSCA Title VI applies instead.
