A susan paresseux is a rotating shelf fitted inside a corner cabinet so that items at the back can be brought to the front. Two forms exist: a full round tray on a central post, and pie-cut or kidney-shaped trays that rotate on a corner-mounted mechanism.
The two types
A tour complet tray sits on a central post and rotates 360°. It suits a corner with a full-height door and a clear opening, and it uses the depth of the corner well — but the corners of the cabinet behind the tray are dead space.
A pie-cut or kidney tray mounts on a corner post and swings out through the door opening. Two trays at different heights are usual. It uses less of the cabinet volume but reaches further back, and it works in a 900 mm corner where a full round will not clear the door.
| Propriétés | Full round | Pie-cut / kidney |
|---|---|---|
| Rotation | 360 ° | Swings through the door |
| Cabinet width needed | 900 mm et plus | 600–900 mm corner |
| Surface utilisable | Haute | Modérée |
| Accès à l'arrière | Bon | Rapidité |
| Chargement typique | Light — dry goods | Light — dry goods |
Diameter has to match the opening
A tray that is too large fouls the door; too small and it wastes the cabinet. In a 900 mm corner base, a 685–760 mm tray is typical, and the tray has to clear the door frame through its full swing, not just at rest.
Height matters as much as diameter. Two trays in a 720 mm base unit leave roughly 280 mm between them and 300 mm below — enough for bottles and packets, not for a 5 kg bag of rice.
When the corner should not be a lazy susan
Heavy items. A loaded tray puts the whole weight on a central post or a corner bracket, and the mechanism is rated for dry goods, not for tins and appliances. A corner carousel loaded with tins will sag and then bind.
Also, a corner with a wide access door is often better served by a blind-corner pull-out, which brings the whole cabinet out on runners. And in a small kitchen, a corner carousel can be less useful than a simple L-shaped run of drawers with a wider working area.
Foire aux questions
What size lazy susan fits a 900 mm corner?
A 685–760 mm tray is typical. The tray has to clear the door frame through its full swing, so check the opening before ordering.
Full round or pie-cut?
Full round where the cabinet and door allow 360° rotation and you want maximum area. Pie-cut where the door opening is narrow or the corner is 600–900 mm.
Can a lazy susan take heavy items?
Not really. The mechanism is designed for dry goods and light packaging. Tins and appliances belong in a drawer.
Is a corner carousel better than drawers?
Not automatically. A corner pull-out on runners carries more weight and reaches further back. A carousel is cheaper and simpler to fit.
